Scott Shafer feels that he owes his life to Ann Arbor. The former Michigan defensive coordinator only spent one miserable season with the Wolverines, as they went 3-9 under new coach Rich Rodriguez in 2008.But heÂll always hold the university close to his heart for a different reason.ÂThe beautiful green eyes of my wife (Missy), he said on conference call today, announcing his hiring as SyracuseÂs head coach. ÂShortly after we got there, we found out she had some melanoma cancer, and she had some procedures, and we had some very scary moments. But the greatest thing about being in Ann Arbor for us was that she had ... arguably the best doctors in the world for melanoma, both research and curing it. She hasnÂt had any cancer for over three years. So getting beat up there for a year was well worth it to see those beautiful eyes every morning.ÂShafer arrived on a defensive staff that already was put together. There were two who followed Rodriguez from West Virginia (Tony Gibson and Bruce Tall) and another who had experience as a defensive coordinator: Jay Hopson. Shafer was supposed to bring them together, even though he didnÂt hire them.Despite his success the previous year under Jim Harbaugh at Stanford, it didnÂt work.ÂI just didnÂt fit, said Shafer, who is succeeding Doug Marrone, who left for the NFLÂs Buffalo Bills. ÂI went to Michigan because it was Michigan. IÂm from Ohio, and when I was young, I thought there were only two colleges: Ohio State and Michigan. And I didnÂt practice what I preached through the years to my recruits. I said, for years to my recruits, 'ItÂs not about the buildings, itÂs not about the stadium, itÂs not about the uniforms. ItÂs not even about the tradition. ItÂs about the people youÂre going to be with for the next 4-5 years.' I just didnÂt fit. I wish I would have researched it a little bit better to know I wasnÂt going to fit in with that group.ÂU-MÂs 28.9 points per game allowed that season were the worst in the programÂs modern history -- until the mark was approached the following year (27.5) and blown away in 2010 (35.2).Shafer and Michigan parted ways mutually after the season, according to a document he signed stating he would not Âdemean or disparage the university and would be paid until the following May, unless he took another job.The next year, Shafer was SyracuseÂs defensive coordinator and quickly built it into a strong unit, ranking No. 7 nationally in total defense in 2010.Shafer was a coaching star when he arrived at Michigan and resumed that track after he left, culminating in his first chance as head coach.ÂI got a lot of good out of that (Michigan experience), a lot of wisdom out of that, that whole group, coach Rodriguez and that whole group, he said. ÂI appreciated that opportunity, and I learned a lot from it.ÂContact Mark Snyder: msnyder@freepress.com. Follow him on Twitter .

General Motors will open the third of four new software centers near Atlanta. The automaker plans to hire about 1,000 software engineers, project managers, database experts and others to staff the new operation in Roswell, Ga., north of Atlanta. The fourth location is to be announced soon. The newest Innovation Center is part of GM's effort to in-source about 90% of the company's information technology work. When Chief Information Officer Randy Mott joined the company in February, GM workers did only about 10% of its IT work. But Mott is confident GM can save money by doing most of that work in-house because of opportunities to eliminate overlapping software applications, databases and computer systems. That, in turn, can expedite development of new vehicles."We look to the Innovation Centers to design and deliver IT that drives down the cost of ongoing operations while continuously increasing the level and speed at which innovative products and services are available to GM customers," Mott said in a statement. "The IT Innovation Centers are critical to our overall GM business strategy and IT transformation."In October, GM said it would hire 1,500 workers for a software center at the GM Technical Center in Warren. The company previously launched a software center in Austin, Texas, where it is hiring 500 workers.GM also recently announced that it would hire 3,000 Hewlett-Packard employees who previously did IT work for the automaker. The automaker gravitated toward the Atlanta area in part because of the "deep pool of high-tech expertise through the surrounding colleges, universities and talent residing in the area," Mott said.

Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians has been released from an Indianapolis hospital, and he plans to rest for a few days before starting interviews for open head-coaching positions with NFL teams, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday.
No interviews have been scheduled, but NFL teams reportedly interested in meeting with Arians include the Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns, Chicago Bears and San Diego Chargers. On Wednesday, the Chargers hired Tom Telesco, the Colts' former vice president of football operations, as their new general manager
